The mission of the Office of Internal Affairs (IA) is to maintain the integrity of all Plantation Police Department personnel and to protect the community's trust through transparency and communication. The Office of Internal Affairs aims to ensure fair and equitable due diligence is given to every complainant when a complaint has been received. IA is responsible for processing and investigating complaints made against department personnel of the Plantation Police Department.
When a complaint is lodged against an employee, the Office of Internal Affairs will make every effort to ensure a timely, thorough, and fair investigation of the allegation(s) contained in the complaint. The agency's openness in accepting a complaint is a principal element of professionalism and community engagement, and we value the community's role in this process. The Office of Internal Affairs is overseen by a Sergeant, who reports directly to the Chief of Police.
The Office of Internal Affairs duties include:
- Investigating alleged misconduct by agency employees.
- Review all matters related to use of force incidents, regardless of whether a complaint is received.
- Investigating critical incidents (i.e., employee-involved shootings).
- Record, register, and control the investigation of complaints against employees.
- Maintain the confidentiality of The Office of Internal Affairs investigations and records.
- Prepare annual statistical reports on the use of force and bias-based profiling incidents.
- Compile and prepare annual reports concerning all complaints received by the agency.
