The Code Enforcement Unit is dedicated to maintaining our community's safety, health, and quality of life by ensuring compliance with local codes and ordinances.

Code Enforcement works diligently throughout the year to address property maintenance issues, zoning violations, and public nuisance complaints, contributing to cleaner and safer neighborhoods. Officers have conducted proactive inspections, responded to citizen concerns, and collaborated with residents and businesses to achieve voluntary compliance whenever possible.

By enforcing regulations that uphold community standards, the unit plays a vital role in preserving property values and enhancing the overall livability of our city.

Contacting Code Enforcement

Code complaints may be made to the Code Enforcement Unit at any time during normal business hours (Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm) by dialing 954-797-2267 or after hours at the Police Department by dialing 954-797-2100. All life threatening emergencies should immediately be reported by dialing 911.

Common Violations

Association/Condominium/Homeowner

It is important to remember that a resident of Plantation may have to adhere to deed restrictions and condominium /homeowners association rules that are more restrictive than City Codes. Should a community be under a homeowners association, it is the responsibility of the homeowner to review any deed restrictions listed in his/her documents in order to fully understand his/her responsibility and any regulated subjects in his/her neighborhood. The City does not enforce these rules.

Lawn Parking

All vehicles are to be parked completely on a driveway, within a garage, carport, or accessory building. Vehicles may be parked in back yard, provided they are screened from view by a 6’ solid fence, or dense vegetation on all sides (both from roadway and adjacent properties). Parking on the swale, or over the sidewalk is not allowed. Obtain a permit should you require an expanded driveway, fence, or accessory building.

Nuisance, Outdoor Storage

Generally, refers to items that should not be stored outside – such as couches, kitchen tables, luggage, appliances, etc. Homeowner tools, shovels, garden supplies, landscape supplies, chemicals, barbecue grills, buckets, garbage containers, automotive parts, should be kept in side or neatly packed and protected in rear yard, reasonably screened from view of the roadway, and your neighbor’s property. Storage of items in car-port should be neatly packed and stored in weather-tight containers (not cardboard boxes or garbage bags.) This excludes excessive storage of any item(s) and any condition that may present itself as an eyesore or creates a health hazard.

Parking of Commercial Vehicles

Commercial vehicles may only be kept at a residential property completely parked inside a carport, garage, or an accessory building. Commercial vehicles cannot be parked in the backyard, behind a fence, or covered up with a car-cover. Overnight parking is not allowed. There should be no visible signs, attachments, equipment, tools or supplies. Certain vehicles, due to their design or primary use, are considered as commercial vehicles, even without signs, attachments, etc.

Vegetation Protruding into Public Rights-of-Way

Trim back grass, shrubbery, or vegetation growing into the sidewalk or roadway. Adequate clearance of 8’ above sidewalks, and 14’ above roadways is recommended. Sidewalks are to be kept clear of obstructions at all times. It is advised to trim shrubbery further back so as to prevent a re-occurrence within a short time period. Regular monitoring and maintenance is required. Contact Public Works should you require trimming of a City of Plantation swale tree.

Vegetation Protruding over Waterway

Trim back shrubbery, trees and other vegetation from the waterway so as to not interfere with the use of the canal, lake or waterway as a method of channeling waters during times of flood or other natural disaster. A minimum of an eight-foot vertical open air clearance is required as well as the regular removal of the accumulation of leaves and branches which may fall into the waterway periodically.
