Chief Jeffrey J. Schlegel proudly serves as the Chief of Police for the Plantation Police Department. A dedicated public servant with more than two decades of experience, Chief Schlegel began his career with the department in 2001 and has served in nearly every facet of law enforcement. His leadership is rooted in integrity, accountability, and a deep commitment to the community he serves.
Before being appointed Chief of Police, Chief Schlegel served as Deputy Chief overseeing both the Operations and Administration Bureaus, where he provided direction and supervision to command staff across Patrol, Investigations, Special Operations, Support Services, and General Services. His strategic leadership has guided initiatives in operations, policy development, recruitment, training, accreditation, and community engagement.
A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Chief Schlegel brings the discipline, honor, and commitment to service instilled during his military career into his work in law enforcement. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Florida Atlantic University and a Master of Public Safety from the University of Virginia. He is also a graduate of the University of Louisville’s 62nd Command Officer’s Development Course and the 283rd Session of the FBI National Academy.
Throughout his tenure, Chief Schlegel has led initiatives to strengthen departmental professionalism and enhance community trust, including the creation of employee development programs, the expansion of internal communications strategies, and the pursuit of advanced accreditation standards.
Chief Schlegel is an active member of the Broward County Chiefs of Police Association, the Florida Police Chiefs Association, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and the FBI National Academy Associates.
A husband, father, and lifelong public servant, Chief Schlegel remains dedicated to leading a department that reflects the highest standards of excellence and service to the residents of Plantation.
