Mapping the City's Stormwater Infrastructure Through Advanced GIS Technology
The City of Plantation utilizes a Geographic Information System (GIS) to maintain a comprehensive digital inventory of every parcel within the City and accurately calculate impervious surface areas. This technology provides the foundation for stormwater planning, infrastructure management, flood mitigation, and administration of the Stormwater Utility Program.
Using high-resolution aerial imagery, parcel mapping, and advanced GIS analysis, the City identifies surfaces that prevent rainfall from naturally infiltrating into the ground. These impervious areas generate stormwater runoff that must be collected, conveyed, and managed by the City's drainage system.
What is Impervious Area?
Impervious area is any surface that does not allow rainfall to soak into the soil. These surfaces contribute runoff into the City's stormwater system and include:

- Driveways
- Sidewalks
- Patios
- Pool decks
- Parking lots
- Private streets
- Other paved surfaces
The total impervious area of a property is the basis for determining the property's contribution to stormwater runoff.
