The City of Plantation has several opportunities for residents to volunteer their services to help our City.
At the Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library, patrons ages 13 and up, may participate in the Adopt A Shelf program. Adopt A Shelf was developed by the Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library to help maintain the order and appearance of its shelves so patrons and staff can locate materials easily. Volunteers select a range of shelves in fiction, non-fiction or the children’s room. They are asked to spend a minimum of one hour, one time per week at their convenience to straighten their area. The books must be kept in proper Dewey Decimal and/or alphabetical order. The shelves need to be kept neat by aligning books with the front shelf whenever possible and shifting when necessary. Shelves need to be dusted as needed. Any books that need new covers, cleaning or repair should be brought to the Reference Librarian. Volunteers sign in and out in a record log kept at the front desk. For information, call 954-797-2144.
The Historical Museum accepts volunteers during the month of November to help decorate trees as part of its Winter Wonderland celebration. Each a year a new themed tree is added; the Museum boasts over 35 decorated trees, with themes such as fire trucks, butterflies, a Red hat tree, a Disney, Victorian dolls and more. To volunteer for this or other opportunities, call the Museum at 954-797-2722.
Parks & Recreation accepts volunteers to help with its annual Halloween and Safety festival, held in October. They also accept volunteers to play Santa and his elves on Christmas Eve. Santa and his helpers visit every street in Plantation on Christmas eve, preceded by either a Police car or a fire truck with horns and sirens blaring! But don’t worry – you won’t be alone. Enough Santas are recruited to cover the City in a couple of hours. To volunteer for either one of these events, call 954-452-2514.
