Too Incredible To Miss!
GREEN DAY environmental expo
and
25th Annual Plantation Landscape Awards For Nurturing Our Town
(P.L.A.N.T. Awards)
Liberty Tree Park 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, Saturday, February 28, 2009.
Last year Plantation’s “GREEN Day” environmental expo was visited by over 800 enthusiastic adults and kids who came out to enjoy a day in the park, applaud environmental award winners, and gather information on an eclectic mix of environmentally friendly crafts, products and services.
If you think that all environmental expos are alike, think again! Happy shoppers bought beautiful and creative nature-inspired art, solar garden wares and low energy household items. From new green construction initiatives, to native and xeriscape plants for sale - everything offered was smart and sustainable. People learned how to grow orchids and bromeliads, and were thrilled to witness a demonstration garden, complete with a rain barrel. University of Florida offered information on green career possibilities. Plantation Parks sponsored a very special burrowing owl protection project. Environmentally friendly transportation was demonstrated with fuel-efficient autos, kayaks, and bicycles. Plantation Utilities offered water conservation advise and featured a grand prize give-away of a low-flow toilet – including installation (won by one very lucky Plantation resident). Healthy living styles were represented by businesses that provided stress-relieving yoga classes, good nutritional eats, natural skin products, no-VOC paints, and no-PERC dry cleaning. If you are an environmental buff or just intrigued over the possibilities, what could be better?
Many thanks to our Target Stores and Publix for contributing those nifty looking and reusable grocery/stuff bags that were given out. Also thanks to FPL for their generous monetary donation. Thank you to all the City of Plantation and Broward County departments that contributed their resources: Plantation Landscape Architecture, Parks & Recreation, Utilities, Economic Development and Plantation Police Bike Patrol; Broward County Waste & Recycling, Environmental Planning, South Florida Water Management and the University of Florida. And a very special thank you to all the non-profits who participated - for their tireless efforts and donations of both money and personal time to help sustain the environment, which in turn helps make our planet a better place to live.
But enough about last year – mark your calendar and make plans to gather together for an even bigger, better and more fun event in 2009!
