CITY OF
WATER OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR
DEFINITION
This is an
exempt position which is administrative work in the operation and mechanical
maintenance of a water treatment plant.
Employee
receives general supervision from the department head, but must exercise
considerable independent judgment in the execution of assigned duties.
EXAMPLES
OF WORK PERFORMED
Supervises
and participates in operating and maintaining a water treatment plant.
Lays out
work schedules and assigns employees to specified tasks.
Prepares
daily and monthly reports on the operations, chemicals used in the purification
or treatment process, mechanical and electrical repair work performed, and
employees work schedule.
Inventories
chemicals and parts and prepares requisitions for supplies.
Supervises
the performance of preventive maintenance and minor repair work on equipment.
Performs
routine and special chemical tests on the purification process.
Records
readings of various gauges and meters.
Assists in
setting of public relations policies and procedures.
Performs
related work as required and as directed.
KNOWLEDGE,
ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable
knowledge of method and practices of modern water purification treatment
procedures.
Considerable
knowledge of health and safety factors in operating plant equipment.
Knowledge of
effective supervisory methods and techniques.
Knowledge of
the mechanical and electrical equipment and maintenance procedures.
Ability to
supervise a staff of technical/mechanically oriented employees.
Ability to
inspect equipment and maintenance procedures.
Ability to
inspect equipment in operation, detect changes in conditions, and order the
necessary adjustments or general repairs be made.

Minimum
working proficiency with MS Word, MS Excel, and File Manipulation.
Assists in
preparation and execution of the budget.
Ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees
department officials and the general public.
Ability to
plan, layout and supervise plant operation and maintenance work; maintain
operating records and prepare reports.
Ability to
operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.
DESIRABLE
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Bachelor's
Degree from an accredited College or University with minimum of five (5) years
experience in the operations of the water treatment plant. Class "A" Certification by Florida
State Department of Environmental Protection.
Any
equivalent combination of education, experience and training may be considered.
This is a designated “Response” classification
in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying
this position to work for declared emergencies.
Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the
appropriate level is mandatory.
NOTE: This job classification is designated as a
“safety sensitive” or “special risk” position, therefore an employee in this position
