CITY OF
UTILITIES SERVICE WORKER
DEFINITION
This is a
non-exempt position, which is manual semi-skilled work in the care and
maintenance of water and wastewater lines, manholes, lift stations, meters and
all other aspects pertaining to a water and wastewater utilities system.
The work
involves the operation of heavy equipment and tools which are needed to make
repairs to water and wastewater lines.
Work is usually performed under the direction of a higher
classification; however, constant supervision is not necessary for familiar
tasks which can be performed without difficulty. Position requires wearing a
beeper and employee is subject to call outs at anytime.
EXAMPLES
OF WORK PERFORMED
May install,
maintain and repair lines, water meters and fire hydrants.
May perform
preventive maintenance of wastewater systems, manholes, etc.
May perform
backflow preventive duties.
May operate
various mechanical equipment used in maintenance and repair of water and
wastewater lines.
May operate
heavy equipment.
May perform
mechanical repairs at water and wastewater plants.
Performs
related work as required and as directed.
KNOWLEDGE,
ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of
maintenance and repair procedures for water and wastewater utilities system.
Knowledge of
proper sanitation procedures for water main repair.
Knowledge of
the occupational hazards of the trade and of proper use of safety procedures.
Ability to
operate equipment used for repair of water and wastewater lines and water
meters.
Ability to
understand and carry out instructions and to complete work assignments
correctly.
Ability to
perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under hot and humid
conditions.
Ability to
install, maintain and repair lines, water meters and fire hydrants.
Ability to
perform backflow preventive duties.

Ability to
read and understand blue prints and as-built drawings.
Ability to
operate a City vehicle and acquire a commercial driver’s license (CDL) within
six (6) months of employment in position.
Ability to
work a flexible work schedule, including call outs.
Ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City
employees, department officials and the general public.
DESIRABLE
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Two (2)
years of experience in water and wastewater utilities system performing all
related work necessary to maintain a water and wastewater system. Some plumbing experience required. Class A, B or C Voluntary Florida Water and
Pollution Control Operator’s Association Water and/or Waste Water Systems
Operators License.
This is a designated “Response” classification
in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying
this position to work for declared emergencies.
Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the
appropriate level is mandatory.
NOTE: This job classification is designated as a
“safety sensitive” or “special risk” position, therefore an employee in this
position is subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing as stated in the City
