CITY OF
UTILITIES MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR
DEFINITION
This is an
exempt position, which is responsible supervisory work in planning and
directing the maintenance programs of the Utilities Department.
An employee
in this classification is responsible for overseeing that assigned tasks are
performed properly and efficiently, and that work schedules are
maintained. Responsibility includes
setting up work schedules, inspecting and supervising work in progress and on
completion; assisting workers on difficult or unusual situations. Work is performed under the general
supervision of the Director or Assistant Utilities Director.
EXAMPLES
OF WORK PERFORMED
Supervises
the maintenance and repair of pumps, generators, engines, gearboxes and
electrical controls.
Inspects
work in progress, modify or adjust work methods and related factors to insure
that projects are completed.
Supervises
and trains new Utilities Department workers.
Maintains
current inventories on all plant equipment and supplies and maintains repair
records showing costs of labor and material used.
Supervises
the installation of meters, water breaks, and cleaning of wastewater lines.
Exercises
care and safety in use of equipment and tools required to complete assigned
tasks and knowledge of safety rules and regulations prescribed by the City.
Performs
related work as required and as directed.
KNOWLEDGE,
ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable
knowledge of water and wastewater plant maintenance procedures.
Thorough
knowledge of the maintenance and repair requirements of water, wastewater and
lift station equipment.
Knowledge of
modern methods of personnel supervision.
Knowledge of
the hazards involved and applicable safety precautions of work.
Ability to
compile and maintain accurate records and prepare comprehensive reports.
Ability to
supervise the work of utility workers and to obtain efficient results.
Ability to
understand and follow instructions and to complete work assignments correctly.

Ability to
adhere to tight schedules and still maintain work quality.
Ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationship with City employees,
departmental officials and the general public.
Ability to
operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.
Skill in the
use and care of all tools and equipment required for the operation and
maintenance of the department.
DESIRABLE
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
High school
graduation supplemented by college level courses in water and wastewater
distribu-tion and collection systems, proper water main disinfection
procedures, and pollution control maintenance.
Thorough
maintenance and repair experience in a related field, preferably in a
supervisory capacity. Any equivalent
combination of experience and training may be considered.
Class A FW
& PCOA Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection License.
Any
equivalent combination of education, experience and training may be considered.
This is a designated “Response” classification
in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying
this position to work for declared emergencies.
Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the
appropriate level is mandatory.
