URBAN FORESTRY PROGRAM COORDINATOR

 

DEFINITION

 

This is a non-exempt position, which is technical work dealing with the various arboricultural and horticultural programs within the City.

 

The employee in this position performs work of a technical nature in the arboriculture/ horticulture disciplines, and must be familiar with all aspects of trees and plants, that grow in South Florida.  The employee also works with the general public and with other City departments and educational entities.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

 

Coordinates the implementation of the City’s Urban Forestry Management Program.

 

Coordinates grant activity for the department.

 

Coordinates the city’s street tree program.

 

Consults with the City Landscape Architect on various City projects.

 

Implements educational programs and joint projects for disseminating information about urban forestry.

 

Collects data and evaluation of the City’s street tree inventory.

 

Develops and maintains the department’s web page.

 

Performs related work as required and as directed.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 

Comprehensive knowledge of current arboricultural and horticultural practices, South Florida trees and other plant species; the morphological and cultural aspects, urban forestry and general horticultural principles.

 

Knowledge of the landscape industry and its procedures.

 

Knowledge of the basic operation of computers including but not limited to Microsoft Word and Excel programs and ability to understand new computer programs.

 

Ability to implement a short and long term urban forestry plan for the City.

 

Ability to comprehend and interpret City codes and ordinances.

 

Ability to author educational programs relating to tree and horticultural issues.

Ability to research and seek to find answers to horticultural/arboricultural problems, which may range from a particular tree concern to a problem city wide.

 

Ability to work with volunteer groups on arboricultural and horticultural issues and projects.

 

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Bachelor degree in urban forestry or a related field from an accredited college, or experience in the arboriculture field.

 

Practical experience in urban forestry, horticulture, and arboriculture; including street tree inventories, tree canopy analysis, and street tree programs.

 

Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.

 

This is a designated “Response” classification in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies.  Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
