URBAN FORESTER

 

DEFINITION       

 

This is a non-exempt position, which is technical work dealing with the various arboricultural & horticultural programs within the City.

 

The employee in this position performs work of a technical nature in the arboriculture/ horti-culture disciplines, and must be familiar with all aspects of trees and plants, that grow in South Florida.  The employee also works with the general public and with other City departments.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED       

 

Data collection and evaluation for the City's Street Tree Inventory Program.

 

Assisting with the daily operations of the City's Street Tree Planting Program.

 

Confers, advises and provides technical assistance to organizations and residents on tree-related and general horticultural problems on private property.

 

Consults with City Landscape Architect on various City projects.

 

Coordinates completion of projects with landscape crew and works closely with the Landscape Inspector and the Public Works Department.

 

Performs related work as required and as directed.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS       

 

Comprehensive knowledge of current arboricultural and horticultural practices, South Florida trees and other plant species; their morphological and cultural aspects, urban forestry and general horticultural principles.

 

Ability to develop and maintain a comprehensive short and long term urban forestry plan for the City.

 

Knowledge of the landscape industry and its procedures.

 

Ability to comprehend and interpret site plans, City codes and ordinances.

 

Ability to author codes and ordinances relating to tree and horticultural issues.

 

Ability to research and seek to find answers to horticultural/arboricultural problems, which may range from a particular plant concern to a problem city wide.

 

Knowledge of the basic operation of computers including but not limited to Microsoft Word and Excel programs and ability to understand new computer programs.

Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.

 

Ability to teach others, including City crews, proper arboricultural practices.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and Department officials.

 

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING       

 

Associates degree in urban forestry or a related field from an accredited college, or five (5) years experience in the arboriculture field.

 

Practical experience in urban forestry, horticulture, and arboriculture; including street tree inventories, tree canopy analysis, and street tree programs and diagnosis of horticultural problems.

 

Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.

 

This classification may be designated as required to work for declared emergencies. Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.

 

This is a designated “Response” classification in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies.  Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
