TENNIS PROFESSIONAL

 

DEFINITION     

 

This is an exempt position, which is responsible recreation work in planning, promoting, and implementing a well-rounded tennis program for all residents of the City.  An employee in this classification is required to arrange for and supervise tennis activities for participants ranging from school-age children through adults.  Supervision may be exercised over instructors, tennis court attendants, tennis court grounds men, volunteers, and other employees who are devoting part of their time to tennis activities.  Work assignments are reviewed through conferences, written reports, and success of the tennis program.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED     

 

Directs, coordinates and supervises the City's comprehensive tennis program.

 

Participates in the preparation of departmental budget request and proposals.

 

Plans, schedules and supervises the work of personnel assigned to tennis facilities.

 

Instructs tennis lessons and coordinates tennis tournaments.

 

Meet with City officials, residents, groups, and organizations regarding tennis programs.

 

Oversees the care and maintenance of clay and hard tennis courts.

 

Prepares written or oral reports and recommendations as required.

 

Performs related work as required and as directed.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS     

 

Thorough knowledge of the practice, procedures and techniques employed in organizing and supervising a comprehensive tennis program.

 

Considerable knowledge of the rules, teaching and coaching techniques of tennis, and maintenance of clay and hard tennis courts.

 

Considerable knowledge of the tennis facilities, equipment, and personnel needed to staff the tennis program.

 

Considerable knowledge of effective supervisory methods and techniques.

 

Ability to prepare and submit reports, both written and orally.

 

Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of assigned staff in a manner conductive to full performance and high morale.

 

Ability to express one's self clearly and conclusively, orally and in writing.

Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.

 

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with departmental officials, community organizations and the general public.

 

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING     

 

Tennis Professional with background in the operation of a municipal tennis facility with the ability to create and implement policies and procedures that are sensitive to the majority of the general population.  Considerable knowledge of maintenance of a total tennis facility to include Pro Shop/restrooms and grounds.

 

Must be affiliated with the United States Professional Tennis Association (ASPTA) or the United States Professional Tennis Registry (ASPTR).

 

This is a designated “Recovery” classification in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies.  Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
