SUPERINTENDENT
OF RECREATION
DEFINITION
This is an exempt position, which is administrative and
supervisory work in planning, coordinating and directing recreational personnel
in various programs within a citywide recreation program and special events.
An employee in this classification is responsible for the
planning, promoting and coordinating a year round recreation program designed
to meet the needs and interests of all potential participants. Work is performed with latitude within
established policies and procedures.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Parks and
Recreation Director who reviews work through conferences, reports and
observation of program effectiveness.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Directs, coordinates and supervises the planning, development
and evaluation of all recreation special events and activities conducted by the
City.
Participates in the preparation of departmental budget request
and proposals.
Prepares and recommends adoption of plans to meet the City's
needs for recreational facilities, programs, events and personnel.
Plans and coordinates special annual programs sponsored or
conducted by the City.
Meets with community clubs, schools, civic groups and the
general public regarding available recreation programs.
Oversees the Parks and Recreation’s publicity needs.
Plans, assigns and directs the work of personnel in the
recreation programs.
Assists in seeking sponsorships for events and Parks and
Recreation’s projects.
Creates sponsorship packages and seeks sponsorships for events
and programs.
Performs related work as required and as directed.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of
recreation administration.
Considerable knowledge of special events and publicity/marketing
techniques.
Considerable knowledge of effective supervisory methods and
techniques.
Ability to conduct in-service training programs for
subordinates.

Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of assigned
staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
Ability to compile and maintain accurate records and prepare
comprehensive reports.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working
relationship with departmental officials, community organizations, other
municipal employees and the general public.
Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required
license.
Skills in organizing, developing and promoting recreational
activities.
Skills in public relations and public speaking to ensure
community participation and interest in activities.
Ability to operate or learn Microsoft word, publisher and excel.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from an accredited four year college or university
with major course work in parks management, recreation, physical education or
related field; considerable experience in planning, coordinating and
supervising recreational programs; or equivalent combination of education,
experience and training may be considered.
Prefer Certified Park & Recreation Professional (CPRP) with

will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared
emergencies. Attendance at National
Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is
mandatory.
