OF FACILITIES
DEFINITION
This is an exempt position,
which is administrative and supervisory work in the development and direction
of the City's recreation operations.
An employee in this
classification is responsible for planning, developing and supervising
community recreation programs for seniors, adults and/or youth; including
Summer Recreation Program, cultural art, physical activities, special interest
classes and special events. Employees
work within departmental policies and procedures; however, exercises
independent judgment in the application of specialized knowledge of community
recreation programming. Work is
performed under the general supervision of the Parks & Recreation Director
who reviews work through conferences, reports and observation for attainment of
desired objective.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Plans, organizes and directs
City-wide recreation programs including; but not limited to summer recreation
programs, cultural art, physical activities, special interest classes and
special events for all age groups.
Supervises recreation and
custodial staff in the development and implementation of community recreation
programs.
Coordinates, schedules and
maintains related records and statistics for programs and personnel at
recreation facility.
Recommend procedures and
policies, which will facilitate effective recreation programs.
Supervises and oversees the
performance of contractors providing recreation instructional services and
materials.
Participates in the recruitment
and selection of full-time, part-time and seasonal staff.
Assists in the preparation of
Division’s budget requests relative to program needs, monitors revenue
expenditures; maintains necessary records and prepares annual and special
program reports.
Coordinates the Vermont
System’s computer program for the entire department, oversees the training
schedule.
Performs related work as
required and as directed.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of the
principles, practices and techniques of public recreation.
Considerable knowledge of the
equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in a comprehensive
community recreation program.

Considerable knowledge of
effective supervisory methods and techniques.
Ability to plan and supervise
the activities of subordinate personnel in a manner conducive to full
performance and high morale.
Ability to compile and maintain
accurate records and prepare comprehensive reports.
Ability to work with and obtain
the cooperation of civic groups and the general community.
Ability to understand and carry
out instructions to complete work assignments correctly.
Ability to operate a City
vehicle and possess the required license.
Ability to establish and
maintain an effective working relationship with departmental officials, other
employees and the general public.
Ability to understand and work
with complex computer programs, such as the Vermont Systems Rec Trac, Golf Trac
and Maintenance Trac programs
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND
TRAINING
Bachelor's degree from an
accredited college or university with major course work in recreation or
closely related field. Experience in
recreation program development, including supervisory experience.
Prefer Certified Parks &
Recreation Professional (CPRP) with
Any equivalent combination of
education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge,
abilities and skills may be considered.
This is a
designated “Recovery” classification in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan
and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared
emergencies. Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training
at the appropriate level is mandatory.
