CROSSING GUARD
DEFINITION
This is a non-exempt position, which is specialized work in the
regulation of vehicular and pedestrian traffic in conjunction with the movement
of children to and from school and is limited to those hours during which
school is opening and closing. Specific
assignments are received from a superior officer and are carried out in
accordance with established procedures.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Duties include stopping the movement of vehicular traffic at
designated crossing points to permit children to cross safely.
Controls the children who use crossing as related to traffic
laws and safety regulations.
Reports all traffic hazards to the police.
Reports flagrant traffic violators and suspicious persons to the
police.
Reports uncooperative children to school officials.
Performs related work as required and as directed.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of traffic safety regulations.
Ability to control the movement of vehicular traffic at
designated crossing points to permit children to cross safely.
Ability to deal firmly and courteously with the public.
Ability to understand orders, laws, ordinances, regulations and
pass a state exam after instruction by traffic officer.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working
relationship with other municipal employees, City officials and the general
public.
Ability to hold and carry a stop sign while walking from one
side of the road to the other side.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Completion of in-service training.
Must currently possess or be eligible to obtain, a
SCHOOL CROSSING

This is a
designated “Will-Call Recovery” classification in the City’s Emergency
Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work
for declared emergencies. Attendance at
National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is
mandatory.
