CUSTODIAN
DEFINITION
This is a non-exempt position, which is manual
work in routine housekeeping and minor building maintenance and repairs. Employee is responsible for the supervision
of all custodial personnel.
An employee in this classification performs
manual work involving a variety of housekeeping tasks. Instructions from supervisors are general in
nature and work is subject to inspection during progress and upon completion. Where employees do not work under continuous
supervision, work follows a well established routine. Primary responsibility is for the use of
proper methods and materials in cleaning and otherwise caring for municipal
buildings and equipment.
EXAMPLES
OF WORK PERFORMED
May schedule, assign and supervise work of
employees engaged in regularly planned projects, emergency activities and
preventive maintenance of the facilities.
Forwards requisitions for necessary maintenance
materials through proper channels, prepares work orders; completes time cards,
accident reports, and other forms as required.
Scrubs, mops, waxes and polishes floors; dusts
and polishes furniture and washes windows, woodwork, toilets, washrooms and
fixtures; and supervises custodial personnel.
May set up chairs, tables and equipment for
meetings, classes, special events, etc.
Use of electric vacuum or floor scrubber and
waxer.
Replaces burned out light bulbs; assists in
making simple repairs to building and equipment, including painting.
Raises and lowers the flag of the assigned
building daily.
Changes trash and garbage cans; cleans tables
and refrigerators; washes floors; performs minor plumbing repairs and minor
maintenance.
Performs related work as required and as
directed.
KNOWLEDGE,
ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of the materials, methods
and equipment typically used in janitorial work and building maintenance.
Considerable knowledge of the hazards involved
in building maintenance and repair work and of precautionary measures to be taken.
Ability to understand and carry out instructions
in order to complete work assignments correctly.

Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work
of a crew of custodial personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and
high morale.
Ability to make on the spot decisions when
necessary.
Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to
cleaning equipment.
Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess
the required license.
Ability to perform a variety of routine
custodial tasks in the care and limited maintenance of building and equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective
working relationship with departmental officials, other municipal employees and
the general public.
Skill in the use, operation and care of tools
and equipment necessary in maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment.
DESIRABLE
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Have successfully graduated from a standard high
school or trade school or possess an acceptable GED certificate.
Have at least five (5) years experience in
varied building maintenance and repair; including some supervisory experience
or training.
Any equivalent combination of experience and
training which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills may be
considered.
This is a designated Response classification
in the Citys Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying
this position to work for declared emergencies.
Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the
appropriate level is mandatory.
