LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT

 

DEFINITION      

      

This is an exempt position, which is professional and technical work in planning, developing and directing the City's landscape program.

 

The employee in this classification is responsible for directing and coordinating the landscape activities of the City.  Work extends to providing technical assistance to developers, builders, committees and residents; reviewing site plans; inspecting and confirming compliance with City

ordinances; drafting and rendering work as may be required.

 

This employee is also responsible for ensuring that the department strives to maintain the highest standards of service and assistance to the public through programs that encourages all employees to keep positive public relations as a primary goal.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED            

 

Plans, develops and coordinates all landscaping activities in compliance with the City's landscaping code.

 

Develops detailed plans which include selection and placement of appropriate trees, shrubs and plants.

 

Confers, advises and provides technical assistance to organizations in landscaping problems and techniques.

 

Reviews all site plans submitted to the City for approval.

 

Inspects sites and areas and assures compliance with approved site plans and ordinances.

 

Coordinates activities with the Planning, Building and Public Works Departments.

 

Provides administrative assistance in the City Planning Department.

 

Chairs the Landscape Planning and Review Board and coordinates its various activities.

 

Performs related work as required and as directed.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS            

 

Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of Landscape Architecture.

 

Comprehensive knowledge of tropical and sub-tropical trees, shrubs and plants including soil composition, irrigation, fertilization, growth patterns and maintenance.

 

Ability to plan, coordinate and direct landscape activities and programs.

 

Ability to interpret and comprehend site plans, codes and ordinances.

Ability to prepare and present plans, programs, instructions, etc.

 

Ability to inspect landscaped areas and assure compliance with approved sites and plans, codes and ordinances.

 

Ability to train or advise City personnel in certain landscape related tasks and activities.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, City officials and other employees.

 

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING            

 

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in Landscape Architecture.

 

Experience in landscape design and application of land use with practical experience in horticulture.

 

Have demonstrated the ability to maintain high standards of service to the public through programs that emphasize positive public relations.

 

Registered landscape architect in the State of Florida.

 

Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.

 

This is a designated “Response” classification in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies.  Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
