IT SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR

 

DEFINITION

 

This is an exempt position, which is highly advanced technical and analytical work involving the administration and support of the City of Plantation’s Application Servers and network infrastructure (LAN & WAN) including all network hardware, (VoIP) Telephony Systems, network software and network security policies. 

 

An employee in this classification assists the Information Technology Director in project management including design, development and implementation of all server and client application software and databases.  This employee performs complex problem analysis and provides resolution on all servers, personal computers, computer peripheral and network components.   

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

 

Installation, configuration and troubleshooting of multi-domain Windows Active Directory network.

Installation, configuration and support of Microsoft Exchange servers.

Installation, configuration and support of Microsoft IIS web servers.

Manages strategic telephony applications.

Coordinates between the various departments and the Information Technology Department to maintain and improve VoIP services.

Monitors telephony system performance overall and by individual networked device.

Installation, configuration and troubleshoot network Cisco 1600-2600 routers and 3500-6500 switches.

Installation, configuration and support of network Cisco PIX firewalls.

Installation, configuration and support of TCP/IP, WINS, DNS, RAS

Manages security to network and access to network resources.

Performs upgrades and maintenance on city’s servers.

Works with City users to troubleshoot and resolve network and PC related hardware and software issues.

Assists Information Technology Director in design, procurement and implementation of projects related to the Information Technology Department.

Performs related duties as required and as directed.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 

Considerable knowledge of network design, principles, practices, analysis and security. 

 

Considerable knowledge of methods and equipment utilized in monitoring and troubleshooting network and communication system.

Considerable knowledge of network systems and system applications in a server/client environment.

 

Considerable knowledge of  Microsoft SQL Server.

 

Ability to effectively analyze and solve problems through a systematic and logical approach.

 

Ability to effectively analyze and resolve network issues.

 

Ability to effectively analyze and resolve client/server application issues.

 

Ability to work with vendors and assist in procurement process.

 

Ability to relate technical communication issues clearly, both orally and in writing, to non-technical individuals.

 

Ability to work with confidential data and maintain such confidence.

 

Ability to assist City personnel in the operations of computer systems and application programs.

 

Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.

 

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees, City officials and the general public.

 

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in computer science/related field, or any equivalent combination of education, experience or training which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.  Industry certifications including A+, MCSE and CCNA/CCNP highly desirable.  Some knowledge of SAN, EDMS and WAN is also desirable

 

This is a designated “Recovery” classification in the city’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies. Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
