IRRIGATION TECHNICIAN

 

DEFINITION

 

This is a non-exempt position, which is skilled work that required significant knowledge and skills related to irrigation installation and maintenance of all irrigation systems.  Work is reviewed by supervisor through direct observation while work is in progress and upon completion.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

 

Responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of complex irrigation systems.

 

Responsible for the installation of time clocks that operate irrigation systems.

 

Responsible for making necessary repairs and adjustments to maintain all systems in proper working condition.

 

May compile and submit reports and records on conditions of all systems.

 

Responsible for the inventory of parts, supplies and equipment of irrigation systems.

 

Conducts regular system inspections and performs trouble shooting exercise.

 

May assist in carrying out hurricane plans to completion.

 

Performs related work as required and as directed.

 

Performs any assigned duty before, during and after a declared emergency.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 

Considerable knowledge in the field of irrigation, installation, maintenance and repairs.

 

Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of the proper use of safety practices.

 

Ability to diagnose problems with electrical meters and pumps; necessary repairs and adjustments to maintain all systems in proper working conditions.

 

Ability to install time clocks that operate irrigation systems.

 

Ability to maintain records and submit reports on conditions of all irrigation systems.

 

Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays and evenings, as required.

 

Ability to assist in supervising work crew, as directed.

 

Ability to interpret irrigation plans.

Ability to install valve program for irrigation systems.

 

Ability to operate various pieces of maintenance equipment.

 

Ability to understand and carry out instructions and to complete work assignments correctly.

 

Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under hot and humid conditions.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and other employees.

 

Ability to operate City vehicle and possess the required license.

 

Ability to assist the City in carrying out a hurricane plan to completion.

 

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school, considerable experience in the maintenance and installation to complex irrigation systems, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.

 

This is a designated “Recovery” classification in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies.  Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
