CITY OF
INSPECTOR II - MECHANICAL
DEFINITION
This
is an exempt position, which is technical inspection/plan review work in
securing compliance with codes, laws and regulations governing the installation
and operation of mechanical systems and equipment.
Work
involves the review and disposition of applications and plans for mechanical
permits to insure that all such construction meets the required standards of
the Florida Building Code as to construction, maintenance, safety and
conformance. Work is carried out
independently, but employee may receive work orders from the Chief Building
Official. The Chief Mechanical Inspector
reviews work performance.
Performs
the mechanical plans review services; coordinates plans review activities in
conformance with sound plans review standards; issues inspection reports.
Mechanical
Inspector II shall have the power and duties as may be delegated by the Chief
Mechanical Inspector or Chief Building Official.
Performs
inspections of all buildings or structures as to the conformity to conditions
of the permit.
Checks
to insure that mechanical plans meet with the Citys building requirements.
Prepares
reports, performs inspections and investigations as required.
Consults
and deals with the general public, department officials, contractors, building
owners and associates.
Enforces
mechanical codes.
Performs
duties of Chief Mechanical Inspector during his absence.
Performs
inspections which may require employee to climb ladders or multiple flights of
stairs, withstand exposure to heights.
Performs
related work as required and as directed.
Thorough
knowledge of the principles and practices of mechanical installations in modern
building construction and of mechanical inspection.
Thorough
knowledge of mechanical codes, ordinances and regulations, and mechanical
construction materials and product control standards including a thorough
knowledge of the Florida Building Codes, and related Standards.

Knowledge
of modern office procedures, practices and methods.
Ability
to coordinate and plan inspection activities of the City.
Ability
to understand plans and specifications and to determine their compliance with
established standards.
Ability
to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.
Ability
to prepare reports and maintain records.
Ability
to enforce conformity with firmness, tact, and impartiality.
Ability
to perform field inspection work.
Ability
to consult with contractors, building owners, the general public, departmental
officials, and associates to maintain satisfactory working relationships on
inspection and regulatory matters.
Ability
to understand and carry out instructions and to complete work assignments
correctly.
Ability
to adhere to tight schedules and still maintain work quality.
Ability
to learn computer system for permit activities.
Ability
to research microfilm/digitizer and operation of systems.
Ability
to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other
municipal employees, department officials and the general public.
Graduation from a standard high school or an
equivalent recognized certificate, considerable responsible experience in the
inspection of plans, specifications, construction installation and alterations
of various building trades, project or any equivalent combination of experience
and training may be considered.
To be eligible for appointment as a Mechanical
Inspector II, such person shall be certified by the State of

(a)
A Florida Registered Architect or
Registered Professional Engineer in the discipline requested and having
practiced within the jurisdiction of this Code for at least three (3) years and
two (2) years as a Mechanical Inspector.

(b)
Ten (10) years experience as a licensed
Master Mechanical Contractor or Class A A/C;
(c)
Five (5) years experience as Chief
Mechanical Inspector, Mechanical Plans Examiner or Mechanical Inspector, three
(3) years of which shall have been with the jurisdiction of Florida Building
Code.
(d)
An applicant for Certification as a
Mechanical Plans Examiner under the provisions of this section who is a
graduate from an accredited school holding a Bachelor or Associate of Science
degree in Engineering, Architecture or Building Construction may be credited
for three (3) years for Bachelor Degree or one (1) year for an Associate Degree
of the required ten year experience for the Mechanical discipline as listed
below:

shall possess a current Certificate of Competency as an A/C Contractor Class
A or Mechanical Contractor issued by:

Broward County Central Examining Board of
Building Construction Trades (as Class A Unlimited General Mechanical) Dade
County Construction Trades Qualifying Board, Block proctored, issued on or
after January 1, 1968.

Any other proctored examination graded by
an independent testing agency approved by the Broward County Board of Rules and
Appeals.
This is a designated Recovery classification
in the Citys Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying
this position to work for declared emergencies.
Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the
appropriate level is mandatory.
