CITY OF
INSPECTOR I - MECHANICAL
DEFINITION
This
is an exempt position, which is technical inspectional work in securing
compliance with the Florida Mechanical Code and City ordinances at accepted
standards governing the installation and operation of mechanical systems and
equipment.
An employee in this classification is responsible for the
inspection of a variety of mechanical installations, so as to assure the
standards of quality, material, workmanship and safety as established by the
Florida Mechanical Code and the City ordinances. This employee normally works independently on
field inspections, making decisions requiring the use of technical judgment and
discretion; however, consults with the Chief Mechanical Inspector and/or the
Chief Building Official on the more difficult or unusual cases. Work performance is reviewed by the Chief
Mechanical Inspector and/or the Chief Building Official.
Inspects new and existing air conditioning, heating and
refrigeration installations and mechanical piping in residential, commercial
and industrial buildings during construction and completion for workmanship and
materials and for conformance to City ordinances and approved plans and
specifications.
Checks
plans and workmanship to see that mechanical work complies with ordinances and
regulations, and recommends use of such installations.
Prepares
reports, performs inspections and investigations as required.
Consults
and deals with the general public, departmental officials, contractors building
owners and associates.
Performs
related work as required and as directed.
Knowledge of the modern practices involved in constructing,
installing, maintaining and operating a variety of mechanical installations,
equipment and appliances.
Knowledge
of possible defects and faults in mechanical systems and appliances, and of
standard testing devices and effective corrective measures.
Knowledge
of national, state and local mechanical codes laws and regulations.
Ability
to detect and locate defective workmanship and operations at any stage of the
installation.
Ability
to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.
Ability
to enforce conformity with firmness, tact and impartiality.
Ability
to understand and carry out instructions and to complete work assignments
correctly.
Ability
to adhere to tight schedules and still maintain work quality.
Ability
to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other
municipal employees, departmental officials and the general public.

Considerable
experience in the mechanical field or equivalent combination of experience and
training may be considered. Graduation
from a standard high school, vocational school or equivalent recognized
standard certificate.
To
be eligible for appointment as a Mechanical Inspector, such person shall be
certified by the State of
(a)
A Registered Professional Engineer in the discipline requested and
having practiced within the jurisdiction of this Code for at least two (2)
years; or
(b)
Five (5) years construction experience in the mechanical field in a
supervisory capacity of which at least two (2) years shall have been within the
jurisdiction of the Florida Building Code.
(c)
An applicant for Certification as Mechanical Inspector under the
provisions of this section who is a graduate from an accredited school holding
a Bachelor or Associate of Science Degree in Engineering, Architecture or
Building Construction may be credited for three (3) years for Bachelor Degree
or one (1) year for an Associate Degree of the required five year experience.
(d)
Each of the applicants shall possess a current Certificate of
Competency as a Mechanical Contractor or Class A Air Conditioning Contractor
issued by:

Dade County Construction Trades Qualifying Board, Block proctored,
issued on or after January 1, 1968.

Any other proctored examination graded by an independent testing agency
approved by the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals.
This is a designated Recovery classification
in the Citys Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying
this position to work for declared emergencies.
Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the
appropriate level is mandatory.
