CITY
OF
GRAPHIC DESIGNER
This
is a non-exempt professional graphic design position with various design and
public relations responsibilities.
An
employee is this classification will assist in the implementation of the City’s
public information dissemination program by preparing brochures, newsletters,
posters, films with narratives and performs other such applicable tasks, as
determined to be necessary. Work is
performed under the direction of the Administrative Assistant/Public Relations
position in the Administration Department.
The employee is required to exercise considerable initiative,
independent judgment and creativity in order to accomplish assignments.
Plans
and develops various media brochures, pamphlets, films and graphical
presentations.
Designs
logos, posters, and other related illustrations.
Helps
to publicize various events, activities and other programs sponsored by the
City.
Edits
and ensures that publications are suitable for final print relating to layout,
design, color and other procedures used by the City or the printing industry.
Assists
in the creation of universal standards for publications that are within the
guidelines and expectations of the Administration Department.
Art-direct
production of posters and handouts from special events.
Designs
advertisements.
Photographs
and videotapes events and any other requested projects.
Assists
with the maintenance of the web site from a graphic design standpoint.
Coordinates
specialized print jobs from bid specification to delivery of the work.
Meetings
with printers to explain job requirements and expectations.
Responsible
for tracking active print projects.
Scans
and maintains an electronic archive of photographs, logos, illustrations and
other graphics.
Maintains
a hard copy archive of photographs, illustrations, publications and other
graphics for use by departments.
Organizes
workshops to give instruction on effective document design and layout.
Performs
other related duties as required and as directed.

Extensive
knowledge of graphic design and artwork.
Extensive
knowledge of computer software for graphic design and artwork (specifically:
Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, QuarKxpress, Adobe Studio, Microsoft Operating
Systems, MS Office, Film Editing Software and Audio Editing Software).
Knowledge
of photography and basic filmmaking.
Knowledge
of modern techniques and methodology of graphic design and artwork.
Knowledge
of printing principles and color matching.
Knowledge
of and the ability to create employee booklets that meet the organizational
guidelines and culture of the City.
Ability
to produce creative designs and layouts.
Ability
to independently set project schedules and meet deadlines.
Ability
to express ideas both orally and written.
Ability
to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.
Ability
to produce publications that are eye-catching and reader friendly.
Ability
to understand governmental operations and functions.
Ability
to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with elected
officials, department heads, other employees, members of the media and the
public at large.
Excellent
writing and design skills.
Bachelor
degree in Graphic Design, Bachelor degree in Art or closely related field. An equivalent amount of experience in lieu of
degree may be considered. Any equivalent
combination of education, experience and training may be considered.
This is a
designated “Recovery On-Call” classification in the City’s Emergency Operations
Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared
emergencies. Attendance at National
Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is
mandatory.
