CITY OF
GARAGE SUPERVISOR
DEFINITION
This is an
exempt position, which is supervisory and skilled mechanical work in directing
the operations of the City's equipment maintenance and automotive repair
garage.
An employee
in this classification supervises the servicing, overhauling, repairing and
preventative maintenance work of a garage servicing a wide variety of
equipment; heavy construction, light and heavy trucks and passenger cars. Emphasis of the work is on the efficient management
of the repair facility and the high level of service rendered to the
departments served. Supervision is
exercised over skilled and semi-skilled personnel. Work is reviewed by superiors through
observation of shop activities, review of reports and the continuing
effectiveness of the program.
EXAMPLES
OF WORK PERFORMED
Supervises
the repair, preventative maintenance and servicing of all equipment.
Supervises
the making of minor and major repairs to gasoline and diesel engines, chassis,
bodies and other equipment.
Schedules
work for subordinate staff.
Adjusts work
schedule to meet fluctuations in maintenance needs of equipment and
availability of required personnel.
Supervises
the maintenance of various vehicle and equipment records pertaining to time and
mileage.
Recommends
and implements new methods for improving operating procedures.
Makes
periodic checks and final inspections on work.
Approves
requisitions for parts and materials not carried in stock; insures that work is
covered by shop work orders, as required.
Performs
related work as required and as directed.
KNOWLEDGE,
ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Thorough
knowledge of the principles and techniques of shop management in the area of
automotive and related mechanics.
Thorough
knowledge of the methods, materials and tools of the automotive mechanic trade.
Comprehensive
knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures and techniques.
Considerable
knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.

knowledge of effective supervisory methods and techniques.
Ability to
diagnose defects of automotive equipment and to remedy defects.
Ability to
plan and direct the work of an automotive shop, making efficient use of labor
and materials.
Ability to
operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.
Ability to
supervise in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
Ability to
establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other municipal
employees, City officials and the general public.
Skill in the
use of all types of shop tools and equipment of the trade.
DESIRABLE
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
High school
or trade school graduation; considerable supervisory experience in the repair
of varied automotive and public works construction equipment; must be certified
in automotive service excellence and small engine repair shops; or an
equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required
knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.
This is a designated Response classification
in the Citys Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying
this position to work for declared emergencies.
Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the
appropriate level is mandatory.
