FIRE TRAINING CAPTAIN

 

DEFINITION

 

This is an exempt position, which is responsible administrative and supervisory work, second in command in the Training Division.

 

An employee in this classification is responsible for coordinating the training and maintaining the personnel records of the department.  This employee manages personnel, plans, directs, coordinates and evaluates all fire suppression, Rescue (EMS) and safety education programs for the department.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

 

Assesses baseline skills of division personnel, evaluates present class and drill procedures.

 

Plans, schedules and conducts training classes and drills.

 

Creates and maintains a training matrix system showing all mandatory, specialized, optional and miscellaneous training.

 

Develops and maintains a system which identifies the training available and who should participate in various offerings.

 

Creates and maintains a system, which identifies and publishes at least one training bulletin per month.

 

Provides specialized training recommendations such as EMS, Haz Mat, etc.

 

Assists in the hiring process.

 

Responds to emergencies and assumes command of the fire scene unless relieved by a ranking officer.

 

Performs related work as required and as directed.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 

Knowledge of modern methods, techniques and theories used in leadership and management skills.

 

Ability to handle highly confidential information, in both written and verbal format.

 

Ability to plan, direct and coordinate the work of subordinates, including junior officers.

 

Ability to plan and prepare lesson plans and present effective training classes.

 

Ability to analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective and reasonable course of action, especially under conditions which are psychologically and emotionally stressful.

Ability to determine customer needs and follow up on them.

 

Ability to consistently demonstrate tact, courtesy, reliability and maturity while carrying out assigned duties.

 

Ability to work in a team environment.

 

Ability to adhere to tight schedules and still maintain work quality.

 

Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.

 

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other municipal employees, City officials and the general public.

 

Must have good computer skills and be familiar with Microsoft Office software.

 

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Associates Degree with six (6) years of work experience in a Fire Department.  State Certified Fire Fighter and Fire Instructor; State or National Certified Paramedic; Certified Instructor in ACLS, PALS and CPR.

 

Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training may be considered.

 

This is a designated “Response” classification in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies.  Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
