CITY OF
FIRE/RESCUE LIEUTENANT
DEFINITION
This is a
non-exempt position, which is shift level work primarily concerned with
emergency and non-emergency activities of the Fire/Rescue Division of the Fire
Department.
EXAMPLES
OF WORK PERFORMED
Administration
of appropriate care at the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic
skill levels, as defined by Florida State Statute in all emergency medical
situations.
Directs and
oversees the appropriate patient care administered by any Paramedic or
Emergency Medical Technician assigned to unit.
Administers
non-emergency programs, which may be established by the City/Department.
Maintains
discipline and enforces departmental rules, regulations and policies.
Supervises
and evaluates performance of assigned personnel.
Participates
in Quality Assurance activities as directed by the Fire/Rescue Division of the
Fire Department.
Instructs or
assists in the instruction of Fire Department members in the First Responder,
or other areas deemed necessary by the division.
Oversees the
scheduled mechanical check-out of assigned vehicles, and assures that proper
documentation and notification is made regarding any mechanical or operational
defects found during vehicle and equipment check-out.
Responsible
for the safe and efficient operation of the rescue unit, and all equipment
therein, that they are assigned to.
Responsible
for the completion of the scheduled check-out of medical equipment, medical
supply inventories, and oversees the replenishment, replacement, and/or repairs
of these items as required.
Responsible
for the completion of all appropriate documentation of Basic Life Support or
Advanced Life Support medical calls as required or directed by the Division,
including patient medical reports and State fire reports.
Performs
related work as required and as directed.

Thorough
knowledge of current medical, rescue and emergency procedures and protocols.
Thorough
knowledge of medical triage procedures.

Considerable
knowledge of effective supervisory methods and techniques.
Ability to
handle highly confidential information, in both written and verbal format.
Ability to
successfully complete and pass all paramedic skills evaluations as set forth by
the Fire/Rescue Division.
Ability to
analyze situations quickly, and correctly adopts an effective course of action.
Ability to
supervise in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
Ability to
prepare reports, as required and as directed.
Ability to
communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to
establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other municipal employees
and the general public.
Ability to
operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.
REQUIRED
TRAINING
Licensed by
the State of
Certification
by the American Heart Association (Provider Course C) of the American Red Cross
(Professional Rescuer) in two man CPR.
Certification
by the American Heart Association as an Advanced Cardiac Life Support provider.
Certification
in emergency vehicle operation course (EVOC).
Document
completion in infectious disease training including AIDS awareness.
This is a designated “Response” classification
in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying
this position to work for declared emergencies.
Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the
appropriate level is mandatory.
