FIRE INSPECTOR - PLANS EXAMINER
DEFINITION
This is an exempt position, which is skilled technical and clerical work in fire investigation, inspection and prevention.
An employee in this classification is responsible for reviewing building plans, life safety systems, all other code items, or requirements and specifications. This employee is responsible for inspecting buildings under construction and existing buildings/premises to insure compliance with applicable laws, codes, ordinances and standards.
Work is reviewed by a superior through observation and for adherence to established policies and procedures.
Examine and approve plans and specifications for building life safety, fire protection and suppression systems, including sprinkler systems, mechanical smoke control, fire alarms and water supplies.
May supervise subordinate employees and volunteers.
May inspect new and existing buildings, premises, and fire hydrant locations and flow requirements, and other fire-related needs to assure compliance with municipal, county, state and federal laws and codes.
May assist in performance and acceptance test of all fire protection and life safety equipment; evaluating their operation under working conditions.
May help provide and present Fire Prevention Programs to schools, industries and businesses.
May attend meetings, when required, to represent the City regarding matters of interest to the Fire Department.
May prepare reports on activities, including recommendations made and action taken.
Performs related work as required and as directed.
Knowledge of laws, codes, and ordinances, relative to fire and life safety.
Knowledge of building construction, materials and methods relative to fire and life safety.
Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of fire prevention, inspection, investigation and fire prevention programs to help in providing compliance of the fire codes.
Ability to handle highly confidential information, in both written and verbal format.

Ability to interpret plans and specifications, and determine if they are in compliance with codes, regulations and established standards.
Ability to maintain records and prepare concise reports; use two-way radios and other fire communication equipment.
Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required driver’s license.
Ability to maintain and carry assigned equipment in the City vehicle.
Ability to use computers, network systems for completing all the daily assignments.
Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with the public.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with departmental and City officials, other municipal employees, and the general public.
Graduation from a standard high school or any equivalent recognized certificate.
Certification as a State Fire Inspector, Plans Examiner, and Firefighter and as a Broward County Fire Inspector, Plans Examiner as set forth by the South Florida Building Code and the South Florida Fire Prevention Code.
This is a designated “Response” classification
in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying
this position to work for declared emergencies.
Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the
appropriate level is mandatory.
