CITY OF
FIRE DEPARTMENT INSPECTOR
DEFINITION
This is an
exempt position, which is skilled technical and clerical work in fire
investigation, inspection and prevention.
An employee
in this classification is responsible for inspecting buildings under
construction and existing buildings/premises to ensure compliance with
applicable laws, codes, ordinances and standards.
Work is
reviewed by a superior through observation and for adherence to established
policies and procedures.
EXAMPLES
OF WORK PERFORMED
Inspect new
and existing buildings/premises, fire hydrant locations, fire protection and
suppression systems; including sprinkler and standpipe systems, mechanical
smoke control and all fire related life safety systems.
May assist
in performance and acceptance test of all fire protection and life safety
equipment, evaluating their operation under working conditions.
May help
provide and present Fire Prevention Programs to schools, industries and
businesses.
May attend
meetings, when required, to represent the City regarding matters of interest to
the Fire Department.
May prepare
reports on activities, including recommendations made and action taken.
Performs
related work as required and as directed.
KNOWLEDGE,
ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Some
knowledge of laws, codes, and ordinances, relative to fire and life safety.
Some
knowledge of building construction, materials and methods.
Some
knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of fire prevention,
inspection, investigation and fire prevention programs.
Ability to
interpret plans and specifications, and determine their compliance with codes,
regulations and established standards.
Ability to
handle highly confidential information, in both written and verbal format.
Ability to
maintain records and prepare concise reports.

Ability to
establish and maintain an effective working relationship with departmental and
City officials, other municipal employees, and the general public.
Ability to
operate City vehicles and possess the required license.
DESIRABLE
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation
from a standard high school or any equivalent recognized certificate.
Certification
as State Fire Inspector, State Firefighter, and as a Broward County Fire
Inspector, as set forth by the South Florida Building Code or the ability to
meet these requirements.
Any
equivalent combination of education, training, or experience which provides the
required knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.
This is a designated Response classification
in the Citys Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying
this position to work for declared emergencies.
Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the
appropriate level is mandatory.
