CITY OF
DIVISION CHIEF - FIRE PREVENTION
This is an exempt position, which is responsible supervisory and administrative work in assistance to the Fire Chief in the administration and operations of the Fire Prevention Division.
An employee in this classification is responsible for the planning, organizing and directing of assigned subordinate clerical personnel of the Fire Department.
This employee serves as Fire Code Official for the City; liaison to the City’s Building Department and Code Enforcement and represents the Fire Chief on selected boards.
Plans, organizes, supervises and coordinates the work of all members assigned to the division.
Assists in preparation and administration of the annual budget.
Acts as liaison between the Fire Chief and City Building Officials, Contractors, Architects, etc. Shall represent the Fire Chief and attend and act on selected boards.
Reviews plans in accordance with all applicable fire codes.
Shall train and evaluate all members assigned to the division.
Comply with organization’s standards and requests.
Performs related work as required and as directed.
Extensive knowledge of modern methods and techniques of fire administration, with emphasis on fire prevention and investigation principles, practices and procedures, and public education and information.
Extensive knowledge of national, state and local laws, regulations and fire codes relating to fire safety and investigation.
Ability to handle highly confidential information, in both written and verbal form.
Ability to effectively apply all laws, regulations and codes to the fire safety issues of the City.
Ability to plan, organize, assign, train and supervise the work of subordinates, both under emergency conditions and in the routine technical, and clerical work.
Ability to analyze situations quickly and correctly, to adopt effective course of action.

Ability to interpret construction and engineering plans and specifications and to determine their compliance with codes, regulations, and establish standards.
Ability to prepare and present concise, meaningful and timely reports in a clear and logical manner.
Ability to speak and represent the department in public to enlist support of its programs.
Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental and City Officials, other City employees, professional groups and the general public.
A
A state of
Ten (10) years experience in Fire Prevention, five (5) years supervisory experience.
Any combination of experience and education may be substituted.
This is a
designated “Response” classification in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan
and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared
emergencies. Attendance at National
Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is
mandatory.
