CUSTOMER SERVICE CLERK - BUILDING

 

DEFINITION

 

This is a non-exempt clerical position in the issuance of all types of construction permits and collection of permit fees and related charges.

 

The employee in this classification is responsible for receiving and processing permit applica-tions for the customers.  Employee receives direction and general supervision from a supervisor, but must exercise initiative and judgment in coping with work situations.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

 

Receives and processes all types of construction permits for the general public.

 

Receives payment for permit and red tag fees.

 

Telephones customers when permits are ready for pick up.

 

Sorts, distributes and files records and other information correctly.

 

Schedules inspections and input into computer.

 

Types routine correspondence.

 

Performs related work as required and as directed.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 

Considerable knowledge of construction terminology.

 

Considerable knowledge of modern computer equipment, including Microsoft software and program, and their use in building activities.

 

Knowledge of proper telephone etiquette and procedures.

 

Ability to operate a computer as it relates to the Building Department.

 

Ability to operate a computerized cash register.

 

Ability to understand and carry out instructions and to complete work assignments correctly.

 

Ability to meet and deal courteously with the general public a must.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees, department officials and the general public.

 

Ability to use good judgment.

Ability to adhere to tight schedules and still maintain work quality.

 

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Graduation from a standard high school or an equivalent recognized certificate, supplemented by typing and computer courses.

 

Experience in general office work, including typing and computer skills; minimum typing speed is at least 40 wpm.

 

A minimum one-year experience, where some data entry work was required.

 

Any equivalent combination of education, experience or training which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.

 

This is a designated “Recovery” classification in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies.  Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
