II - PAINTER
DEFINITION
This is a non-exempt position, which is skilled work in the
painting of buildings, fixtures, signs, and equipment.
An employee in this classification is responsible for carrying
out assignments requiring the use of skilled painting techniques. Work involves individual skilled performance
in accordance with standard trade practices, but is subject to inspection while
in progress and upon completion.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Estimates material needed for various projects.
Prepares surfaces to be painted by use of burners, sandpaper,
scrapers, dusters, sizing, grit or sandblasting, disk sanders or power brush.
Records time and material used on various projects.
Mixes and matches paints and stains.
Applies paint to interior and exterior of buildings, furniture,
pipes, and other fixtures or structures.
Cleans and cares for brushes and other painting equipment.
Performs or assists in other related building trades work.
Performs related work as required and as directed.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and
practices of the painting trade and installation of wallpaper.
Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the
trade.
Knowledge of rigging and scaffolding.
Ability to work neatly and efficiently and to clean equipment
and work area upon completion of the job.
Ability to perform building maintenance and repair work.
Ability to work at moderate heights.

Ability to understand and carry out instructions and to complete
work assignments correctly.
Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required
license.
Ability to adhere to tight schedules and still maintain work
quality.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working
relationship with departmental officials, other municipal employees and the
general public.
Skill in the care and use of paint brushes and other tools of
the painting trade.
Skill in mixing paints, matching and blending colors.
Skill in the application of paints and other finishes with brush
or spray gun.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational
school. Experience as a journeyman
painter or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in this work; or any
equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required
knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.
This is a
designated “Recovery” classification in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan
and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared
emergencies. Attendance at National
Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is
mandatory.
