CRAFTSMAN II - IRRIGATION

 

DEFINITION    

 

This is a non-exempt position which is responsible supervisory and skilled irrigation work which requires significant knowledge and experience in planning, designing, installing, maintaining and repairing the City's irrigation systems.  Work assignments may be received from a superior or assignments may be discovered by the employee through inspection of irrigation systems throughout the City.  Work is subject to review and inspection by a superior while in progress and upon completion.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED        

 

Plans, designs, installs, maintains and repairs the City's irrigation systems.

 

Plans, supervises and coordinates the activities of the irrigation crew.

 

Maintains an established comprehensive maintenance program throughout the City.

 

Responsible for the installation of time clocks that operate irrigation systems.

 

Maintains inventory of parts, supplies and equipment of irrigation systems.

 

Compiles records and submits reports on conditions of all irrigation systems to the Public Works Administration.

 

Enforces safety procedures and precautions.

 

Performs related work as required and as directed.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS        

 

Considerable knowledge and experience in planning, designing, installing, maintaining and repairing modern day irrigation systems.

 

Knowledge of the working of clocks, timers, etc., that operate irrigation systems.

 

Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of the proper use of safety practices.

 

Ability to supervise in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

 

Ability to spot turf grass problems and to identify chinch bug damage and lack of water to same.

 

Ability to maintain an established comprehensive maintenance program throughout the City.

 

Ability to maintain records and submit reports on conditions of all irrigation systems.

 

Ability to troubleshoot irrigation systems for needed repairs.

Ability to operate various pieces of maintenance or construction equipment.

 

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with departmental officials, other municipal employees and the general public.

 

Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.

 

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING        

 

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school; supplemented by supervisory experience with considerable experience and knowledge at a journeyman level in the maintenance and installation of complex irrigation systems; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.

 

This is a designated “Response” classification in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies.  Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
