CRAFTS DIVISION SUPERVISOR

 

DEFINITION            

 

This is an exempt position, which is responsible supervisory and technical work in the execution of construction and maintenance projects for the provisions of municipal services.

 

An employee in this classification performs technical and manual work in directing, coordinating and completing designated projects involving construction, repairs and maintenance of buildings, walls, sidewalks, bike paths and canals.  Work extends to the responsibility for projects developed to conform with City ordinances and specifications and the supervision, instruction and training of subordinates in the implementation, construction and completion of such projects.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED             

        

Plans, lays out and assigns projects which have been approved by Administrative superiors; directs through subordinates varied physical building maintenance, modification and construction in such trades as carpentry, painting, plastering, electrical, plumbing, air conditioning and general maintenance.

 

Will regularly inspect work of subordinates while in progress and upon completion, orders corrective action, instruct workers in proper methods and practices.

 

Performs construction work at a skilled level in several trades to assist and instruct subordinates.

 

Requisitions materials, tools, equipment and supplies, and inspect upon receipt.

 

Maintains records and submits detailed reports on the status of work projects.

 

Performs related work as required and as directed.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS            

 

Thorough knowledge of maintenance, repair, alteration and construction procedures and practices.

 

Considerable knowledge of the  materials, tools and equipment used in general building maintenance and repair work.

 

Knowledge of modern methods of personnel supervision and management.

 

Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to maintenance and construction work.

 

Ability to comprehend and interpret plans and specifications and to direct work accordingly.

 

Ability to assign, supervise and inspect the work of skilled and semi-skilled workers in a variety of construction trades.

Ability to adhere to tight schedules and still maintain work quality.

 

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with departmental officials, other employees, and the general public.

 

Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.

 

Skill in the use, operation and care of tools and equipment necessary in special projects.

 

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING            

 

Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school; at least five (5) years experience in several construction trades, at least one (1) year of which involved supervisory responsibility;  or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.

 

This is a designated “Response” classification in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies.  Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
