COUNSELOR - SUMMER

 

DEFINITION    

 

This is a non-exempt position, which is responsible routine work involving planning and implementing a recreational program for the City's Summer Recreation Camp Program.  An employee in this classification is responsible for supervising a group of children, planning activities such as games, sports, arts and crafts, special events and general activities.  Work is performed under the supervision of the Program Supervisor and the Assistant Program Supervisor.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED    

 

Supervise and participates in games, sports, individual and group activities, arts and crafts, special events, field trips, 4th of July program, etc.

 

Plans and implements assigned special events, sporting events, etc.

 

Travels by bus for frequent field trips, ensuring the overall safety, care and supervision of children participating.

 

Maintains discipline and encourage compliance with safety rules and regulations.

 

Completes and submits attendance and accident reports as required.

 

Performs routine janitorial duties as required.

 

Performs related work as required and as directed.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS    

 

Working knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in summer recreation programs.

 

Knowledge of the rules and conduct of a variety of sports and games.

 

Ability to maintain discipline and encourage compliance with safety rules and regulations.

 

Ability to provide instructions to participants engaged in arts and crafts, group games and sports.

 

Ability to work a flexible work schedule to accommodate the camp's needs and assist in special events during the summer program.

 

Ability to maintain records and compile reports.

 

Ability to understand and carry out instructions and to complete work assignments correctly.

 

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and the general public.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING    

 

Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a G.E.D. certificate from a recognized issuing agency, supplemented by experience in childcare.

 

This is a designated “Recovery” classification in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies. Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
