CITY OF
CITY ENGINEER
DEFINITION
This is an exempt position, which is responsible administrative
and professional technical work in directing engineering programs and
activities.
The employee in this classification is responsible for
coordinating engineering activities with other City departments, other
municipalities,
This employee is also responsible for ensuring that the department
strives to maintain the highest standards of service and assistance to the
public through programs that encourages all employees to keep positive public
relations as a primary goal.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Directs the activities of the City's Engineering Department and
prepares periodic reports and records.
Coordinates the design of municipal projects and specifications.
Member of the Citys Development Review Committee and attends all
meetings.
Responsible for the administration of all roadway, storm water
street lighting and related construction activities within the Citys public
road and water right-of-way and public easements.
Responsible for all traffic engineering functions within the City.
Responsible for inspection of private development drainage, streets,
and sidewalks through required Engineering Department permits.
Responsible for the preparation of flood zone maps, roadway and
waterway jurisdiction maps and other related maps, drawings or charts as may be
required from time-to-time.
Responsible for review of site plans, plats and other engineering
plans.
Responsible for the maintenance of records of site plans,
subdivision plats, and other engineering plans.
Coordinate the assignment of street addresses with postal
authorities and other affected agencies and utility providers.
Administration of construction and inspections of City-owned
bridges and culvert crossings and associated coordination with State Officials.

Responsible for directing the administration of City capital
improvement projects within public right-of-way and any other capital
improvement projects as directed by the Office of Administration.
Administrates the Citys Neighborhood Traffic Management
Partnership Program.
Address citizen inquiries pertaining to engineering related
matters.
Review of street light requests for compliance with City
Ordinance.
Administer the Citys Storm Water Management Program
Administers the Citys Community Rating System for flood
insurance.
Attendance at all City Council meetings.
Attendance at
Develop and maintain positive and effective working relationships
with other municipalities,
Performs related work as required and as directed.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of engineering principles, practices and
procedures, road and drainage design, subdivision review and permitting
process.
Thorough knowledge of the laws and requirements relating to the
engineering function in a
Ability to direct the activities of the Engineering Department and
to supervise in a manner conductive to full performance and high morale.
Ability to make inspections and to determine compliance with plans
and specifications, conduct engineering research and make engineering
computations.
Ability to review site plans, plats and other engineering plans,
and maintain such records.
Ability to meet and deal tactfully with the general public and to
express one's self effectively and clearly.
Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working
relationships with other City employees, City officials and the general public.

Skill in making engineering computations and conducting
engineering research.
Skill in the use of engineering instruments, equipment and
mathematical tables required in professional engineering work.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering and registered as a Professional
Engineer in the State of
Demonstrated ability to maintain high standards of service to the
public through programs that emphasize positive public relations.
This is a designated Recovery
classification in the Citys Emergency Operations Plan and will require the
employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies. Attendance at National
Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is
mandatory.
