ASSISTANT SWIM COACH

 

DEFINITION     

 

This is a non-exempt position, which requires responsible, specialized supervisory work assisting the City's Swim Team Coach in the operation of the City's Swim Team for ages 3 years to senior citizens, including a Masters team.  This individual is a qualified United States Swimming Registered Coach.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED     

 

Assists in planning swim team schedules - daily, monthly and seasonal.

 

Oversees the coaching and management of the Masters Swim Team.

 

Assists in coaching morning and afternoon swim team workouts, including weekend workouts.

 

Assists in running swim camps, clinics and special events.

 

Assists in overseeing the dry land workouts for swim team.

 

Assists in maintaining participant billing records.

 

Assists in completing swim meet entries.

 

Assists with swim meet set-up, including swim meet information, computer entries, heat sheets, swim meet operations and results.

 

Records swim team member's times and updates record board.

 

Assists in supervising swimmers, coaches and volunteers on travel trips.

 

Assists with swimming honor roll for newspapers, motivational lists, arranges interviews and photo sessions for swimmers.

 

Assists in preparation and clean up of the aquatic facility in the event of major storms.

 

Performs related work as required and as directed.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS     

 

Thorough knowledge of competitive swimming.

 

Knowledge of basic United States Swimming (USS), Federated International Swimming Association (FINA), National College Aquatic Association (NCAA) and High School rules, starts and times.

 

Knowledge of ordinances and regulations applicable to the City's Aquatic Complex.

Ability to assist in the planning of swim team schedules; daily, monthly and seasonal.

 

Ability to interact with parents and athletes on all levels, as well as be responsible for the safety and welfare of all team members.

 

Ability to assist with swim meet setup, including swim meet information, computer entry, heat sheets, swim meet operations and results.

 

Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

 

Ability to work for extended periods of time in sunny, hot and humid conditions.

 

Ability to work a flexible work schedule.

 

Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, other employees, the general public and outside organizations and coaches.

 

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING     

 

A degree in physical education, physical science, education, recreation or psychology is desirable.  Must be registered USS coach, which requires current CPR, First Aid and Safety Training for Swim Coaches.  Extensive knowledge of competitive swimming.

 

Certifications must be currently maintained.

 

Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.

 

This is a designated “Recovery” classification in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies.  Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
