CITY OF
ASSISTANT PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR
DEFINITION
This is an
exempt position, which is technical work and administrative assistance in the
Public Works Department activities.
An employee
in this classification is responsible for the supervision of employees,
materials, and equipment used in preventive maintenance of streets, vehicles,
public canals, City property, buildings and facilities. Work is performed under the direct
supervision of the Public Works Director.
EXAMPLES
OF WORK PERFORMED
Directs,
supervises and coordinates assigned personnel in maintenance projects and
varied maintenance activities within the properties assigned, including
functions of carpentry, electrical repairs, painting, interior alteration, vehicle
and equipment repairs, grounds, streets and canal maintenance.
Evaluates
and reviews job performance, recommends hiring and promotional decisions,
disciplinary actions, and policy decisions.
Performs
periodic maintenance inspections.
Assists in the
preparation of the department's annual operating budget.
Insures
safety procedural requirements are adhered to; implements effective safety
training.
Supervises
maintenance records of City property, facilities and maintains individual
equipment repair and service histories.
Prepares
reports and recommendations as required.
Performs
related duties as required and as directed.
KNOWLEDGE,
ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable
knowledge of principles, methods and practices of Public Works engineering
construction and maintenance programs.
Knowledge of
vehicle maintenance, pest control, streets maintenance, building/ground
maintenance and canal maintenance.
Considerable
knowledge of effective supervisory methods and techniques.
Ability to
plan, design, assign and coordinate complex and varied maintenance projects.
Ability to
supervise in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Ability to
communicate ideas clearly to all, from professional to unskilled workers.
Ability to
interpret and follow instructions, plans, sketches and drawings.
Ability to
plan and execute preventive maintenance programs.

analyze time, labor and material requirements and to estimate the costs of
proposed projects.
Ability to
prepare reports, as required and as directed.
Ability to
establish and maintain an effective working relationship with City officials,
other City departments, and the general public.
DESIRABLE
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation
from a standard high school or an equivalent recognized certificate, with
considerable experience in the maintenance of buildings and grounds with
emphasis on supervisory experience.
Demonstrated
interest in the field of Public Works through education, participation in
seminars of semi-technical nature.
Any
equivalent combination of education, experience and training may be considered.
This is a designated “Response” classification
in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying
this position to work for declared emergencies.
Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the
appropriate level is mandatory.
