CITY OF
ASSISTANT CHILDREN'S LIBRARIAN
DEFINITION
This is a
non-exempt position, which is advanced complex work of pre-professional status
in the City's Library.
An employee
in this classification performs work that requires some training in circulation
or departmental desks activities. Work
is usually performed under the supervision of the Children's Librarian,
however, constant supervision is not necessary for routine tasks.
EXAMPLES
OF WORK PERFORMED
Assists
patrons in securing reference material at adult and children's desks.
Assists
patrons at circulation desk and provide readers' advisory and reference
assistance.
Assists in
preparing records of circulation and registration.
Assists with
book repairs.
Assists with
after school/summer programs, story hour, etc., both on site and off site.
Fills in for
Children’s Librarian as needed.
Works
closely with Children's Librarian to plan and execute programs for children's
room.
Responsible
for storytelling, both in the library and off site.
Performs
related work as required and as directed.
KNOWLEDGE,
ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of
computers and computer resources as they pertain to library science, i.e.
library operation, reference, research and office practices.
Knowledge of
library practices and procedures, especially those relating to children.
Knowledge of
clerical routine and operation of equipment used in the library service.
Ability to
gain library skills in a short period of time.
Ability to
understand and carry out instructions in order to complete work assignments
correctly.
Ability to
use and explain the use of library facilities.
Ability to
relate to children in a positive manner.

Ability to
establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees
and Library patrons.
DESIRABLE
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
High school
graduation supplemented by two (2) years of college experience in early
childhood development; or any equivalent combination of education, experience
and training may be considered.
Some
practical experience working with children.
Storytelling
skills needed.
This is a designated “Recovery” classification
in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying
this position to work for declared emergencies.
Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the
appropriate level is mandatory.
