ASSISTANT AQUATICS MANAGER

 

DEFINITION

 

This is a non-exempt position, which is supervisory work in assisting the Aquatics Complex Manager in the administration, operation and maintenance of the City’s Aquatic Facility.

 

An employee in this classification is responsible for assisting in the operation and use of the City’s Aquatic Facility so as to promote the safety, convenience and enjoyment of the patrons. Responsibilities include assisting in the development of programs, various swimming activities, and the maintenance and supervision of the Aquatic Facility. Instruct Lifeguard Training courses, conduct training sessions for lifeguard staff. Train and supervise swimming instructors and teach swimming lessons as needed. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Aquatic Complex Manager who reviews work through conferences, reports and observation for attainment of desired objectives.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

 

Supervises and participates in daily scheduling and direction of swimming pool operations and events, including supervision of lifeguards and other assigned personnel.

 

Supervises cleaning and daily routine maintenance of pool and pool related facilities, including minor repairs and adjustments.

 

Conducts aquatic personnel training sessions in subjects related to the aquatic field.

 

Assists in organizing, promoting, teaching and supervising various swimming activities and programs including but not limited to learn-to-swim classes, individual and group lessons, swim clinics, water polo, special events (e.g. Fourth of July), general recreational and public swimming, diving, etc.

 

Assists in overseeing the collection of deposits of daily revenues for the Aquatics Division.

 

Prepares daily revenue and attendance reports as required.

 

Conducts and analyzes water tests and readings.

 

Assists in preparation and clean up of the aquatic facility in the event of major storms.

 

Performs related work as required and as directed.

 

Thorough knowledge of operation and maintenance of pumps, motors, injection pumps, and other standard swimming pool equipment.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 

Knowledge of well-rounded aquatic programming for community benefit.

Knowledge of modern principles and practices employed in teaching swimming and other aquatic sports.

 

Knowledge and the ability to administer first aid, CPR and AED.

 

Knowledge of effective supervisory methods and techniques.

 

Knowledge of ordinances and regulations applicable to the City’s Aquatic Facility.

 

Ability to coordinate and supervise work of lifeguards and other aquatic personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high moral.

 

Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

 

Ability to work a flexible work schedule.

 

Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.

 

Ability to work for extended periods of time in sunny, hot and humid conditions.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, other employees and the general public.

 

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Associates degree from an accredited college with major course work in recreation, physical education with emphasis in Aquatics, or four (4) years work experience in Aquatics.  Supervisory experience in the operation and/or management of a large Aquatic Facility including instructional experience.

 

Possession of current valid American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor’s Certificate, Lifeguard Training Certificate, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer and AED.

Instructor Authorization for above certifications desired. Current Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (APO).  Certifications must be currently maintained.

 

Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.

 

This is a designated “Recovery” classification in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies. Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
