AQUATICS COMPLEX MANAGER

 

DEFINITION

 

This is an exempt position, which is administrative and supervisory work in the overall operations and maintenance of the City’s Aquatic facilities.

 

An employee in this classification is responsible for the operation and use of the aquatic facility so as to promote the safety, convenience and enjoyment of the patrons.  Responsibilities include development of programs, various swimming activities and organization and supervision of Assistant Aquatics Manager, lead lifeguards, lifeguards, coaches, instructors, cashiers, and employees engaging in custodial and clerical functions for the operation and maintenance of the aquatic facilities.  Employee works within departmental policies and procedures; however, exercises independent judgment in the application of specialized knowledge of aquatic programming.  Work is performed under the general supervision of the Parks & Recreation Director who reviews work through conferences, reports and observation for attainment of desired objective.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

 

Supervises daily pool activity use, pool maintenance, collection of pool fees, dissemination of aquatic program information to the public, and other pool related duties.

 

Supervises the enforcement of aquatic facility rules and regulations and related City ordinances for the safety and convenience of the public.

 

Organizes and conducts various swimming activities, programs, including individual and group swimming lessons, swim clinics and competitions such as meets at tournaments, general recreational and public swimming, diving, etc., to provide complete and comprehensive aquatics services and to promote membership at the City’s Aquatic Complex.

 

Organizes, supervises and monitors competitive meets and special events.

 

Assigns duties to lifeguards and other subordinate employees and supervises their activities.

 

Publishes information as to hours of operation, schedules of activities and fees for activities, goods and services.

 

Requisitions operating supplies and equipment; records and deposits money collected with designated depository; performs or supervises relevant record keeping and reporting duties.

 

Prepares annual budget for Aquatics Complex to be incorporated in the Parks and Recreation Department annual budget.

 

Monitors the operations of all competitive swim clubs, diving clubs, or other special interest clubs using the pool on a contracted basis.

Assists in the preparation and clean up of the aquatic complex in the event of major storms.

 

Performs related work as required and as directed.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 

Considerable knowledge of the operational and maintenance requirements of public swimming pools and of the health and safety regulations governing public use of pools.

 

Considerable knowledge of competitive and recreational aquatics sports principles and practices, and of modern principles and practices employed in teaching swimming and other aquatic sports.

 

Considerable knowledge of effective supervisory methods and techniques.

 

Thorough knowledge of ordinances and regulations applicable to the City’s Aquatic Complex.

 

Considerable knowledge of well-rounded aquatic programming for community benefit.

 

Considerable knowledge of operation and maintenance of pumps, motors and other swimming pool equipment.

 

Ability to instruct all age levels in aquatic skills, including WSI and Lifeguard Instructor courses.

 

Ability to supervise in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

 

Ability to instruct and/or administer first aid.

 

Ability to coordinate and supervise the work of lifeguards and other personnel and to train employees in lifesaving, first aid, public relations and regulations enforcement.

 

Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

 

Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, other employees and the general public.

 

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Graduation from an accredited college with major course study in recreation, physical education

or public administration, with emphasis in aquatics. Supervisory experience in the operation and/or management of a large aquatic facility including instructional experience. Certified Parks & Recreation Professional (CPRP) designation desired.

 

Must possess current valid American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor’s Certificate; Lifeguard Training Certificate including First Aid, CPR for Professional Rescuer, Instructor Trainer (I.T.)for all above listed certifications, CPO or AFO; (Certified Pool or Aquatic Facility Operator).  Above certifications must be currently maintained.

Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.

 

This is a designated “Recovery” classification in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies.  Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
